Quezon City has long been at the forefront of environmental sustainability, implementing a range of initiatives designed to combat climate change and promote a greener urban environment.
Green Building Code 2025
In March 2026, the city introduced the Green Building Code 2025, modernizing its 2009 ordinance to enhance energy efficiency, water conservation, and renewable energy adoption. This code targets a 12% reduction in electricity consumption by 2030, equating to an annual decrease of up to 0.67 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Residents of condominiums could see electricity bills reduced by as much as 50%.
Inclusive Climate Action
Quezon City has also pioneered inclusive climate action by developing a localized definition for Good Green Jobs (GGJ) through extensive community engagement. This effort led to a landmark City Resolution, now advancing as formal legislation, emphasizing the city’s commitment to social equity in environmental initiatives.
Project TRANSFORM
In collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Quezon City launched Project TRANSFORM in April 2024. This program strengthens local climate actions by focusing on biodiversity, greenhouse gas accounting, financial literacy, disaster management, and nature-based solutions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability.
QC BasuHero Program
The Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works introduced the QC BasuHero program to promote recycling and waste reduction. Activities like the House-to-House Recyclables Trading Activity have successfully collected significant amounts of recyclables, benefiting participating homeowners and fostering community involvement in environmental efforts.
QC Green Awards
To recognize and inspire impactful initiatives in disaster resilience and climate action, the city established the QC Green Awards. This program honors outstanding efforts by various community groups, aligning with national and global sustainability goals and positioning Quezon City as a model of excellence in environmental stewardship.
Through these ongoing initiatives, Quezon City demonstrates a steadfast commitment to building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive urban environment for all its residents.
